A Christ-follower’s View of Homosexuality Today

It’s everywhere now.

In the news, magazines, clothing styles, websites, blogs, WordPress’s Freshly Pressed, schools, downtown, uptown…like I said, everywhere.

Anyone opposed to it is painted as a hate monger…or worse. Some people will skirt around the topic any way they can, even if it means a detour to Timbuktu and back. Why jump into that fire if you can avoid it?

In order to be accepted, you have to accept it.

Only “close-minded bigots” will refuse to embrace it.

Big companies back it with millions in spite of boycotts that arise from it. Other big companies get bashed for merely choosing not to condone it.

It’s unavoidable… it’s an in-your-face kind of everywhere.

It’s homosexuality.

So why is it in-your-face everywhere? Why do they care if someone doesn’t accept their lifestyle? Why do they get so angry when Chick-Fil-A voices a different opinion? Or when anyone, for that matter, disagrees with them? Why is the 1-3% population of homosexuals taking up all this space?

Let’s take a brief look at history…

The first account of homosexuals is found in the first book of the Bible, Genesis 19. The city of Sodom was so full of sin that The Lord sent angels to destroy it. However, there was one man God intended to save for the following reason, that he was “vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:(For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.) 2 Peter 2:7

The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.

“My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.”

“No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.”

But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate. Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom—both young and old—surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”

“Get out of our way,” they replied. And they said, “This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door.

But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.

The angels took Lot, his wife and two daughters from Sodom and the story continues…

The Destruction Of Sodom And Gomorrah, a painting by John Martin

By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Early the next morning Abraham (Lot’s uncle) got up and returned to the place where he had stood before the Lord. He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, toward all the land of the plain, and he saw dense smoke rising from the land, like smoke from a furnace.

So when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham, and he brought Lot out of the catastrophe that overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

You may have wondered where the terms sodomite and sodomy came from. Now you know.

You also may wonder why God punished Sodom in this way. We find that answer in 2 Peter 2:6 – “And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly.” And in Jude 1:7, “Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”

Followers of Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God, are often persecuted because they believe what the Bible says – that homosexuality is sin and will be punished. Christians didn’t make that up just to be snobby and close-minded and “better than thou”. God made this up. God, the creator of the universe, the earth and every person on it, said “You shall not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” (Lev 18:22)

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Some argue that you can’t control your “sexual tendencies”, that people are born that way, but the Bible refutes that point. All sin can be overcome by the blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus took our sin on to the cross with Him. Because of His sacrifice, all of us can become new men and women. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17) We no longer have to be tied down by our sins – whether it be homosexuality, adultery, coveting, or selfishness. Seeking God, repenting and turning from our evil ways will ensure eternal life with Christ in glory.

The Bible says we have no excuse not to believe in Him. He has revealed Himself in all of His creation. Rejecting God has serious consequences, which includes being turned over to a reprobate mind to do unclean and vile things. Read the verses below for a full list, but one of them is homosexuality.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things.

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshiped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Romans 1:18-32

And this is why, as followers of Christ, we can not accept and condone the homosexual lifestyle and agenda. It’s not because we hate homosexuals. It’s because we love God and we love His creation. We know that God saved us from our despicable sins and that He can save homosexuals from theirs as well. We don’t want to see them rejecting the God who made us and them and suffering from it.

Everyone wants to feel accepted and, clearly, homosexuals are no different. Our deep longings for acceptance can ultimately only be filled by our Creator. But when we reject God, we look for acceptance elsewhere. The more people we can get to “see things our way” the less guilt we feel in our sin. We have an accomplice in our crime, so to speak.

Homosexuals want their lifestyle acceptable to all, but God won’t accept it. To Jesus, Who is the same yesterday and today and forever (Hebrews 13:8), it is still an abomination and always will be. He wants His people to be free of sin, not basking in it. He wants salvation for all people. And those who want salvation find it in Him and in Him alone.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16
